I Hope You Enjoy,
June ‘25, HYB4 Gallery, Prague, CZ.
The practical component of this final work not only conceptually reflects the theoretical but also incorporates it into the collage, utilizing a literal representation to play off the more ambiguous inclusion that inherently exists in the art. As the meaning behind said thesis revolves around individual perspectivism and the role art plays in documenting such, offering a quite tangible example for the viewer to not only perceive but experience.
This is the significance of positioning the painting on the floor. Forcing interaction with the piece, exploring the subconscious of how viewers would engage, both with the painting and the placed ‘office worker’. Something mundane and ordinary, but in an untraditional setting that compels interaction, yet the worker was not allowed to respond. This concept of viewer consumption then becomes the work itself, as whoever walks in and steps on my art will only view and feel it through their eyes and skin, never my own.
Playing off the common question in a gallery of whether or not one can touch the art or get closer, I wondered what would happen if you forced tactile connection, and by placing the work in the entryway, it mandated interaction from everyone who stepped foot in the space. So why not highlight this version of the art, the one we all individually see differently? Why not create a space that invokes the expression and application of one’s own perspective? Why limit ourselves to the binary methods of artistic consumption?
After walking through this contemporary representation of my experience and this more active depiction of the dialogue I hope to engage in, I offer a window into the entirety of my experience throughout my studies. Incorporating paintings and mixed-media pieces I have created throughout the three years, granting the viewer a glimpse into the nurture and environment that shaped the perspective showcased in the initial room. Representing not just the culmination of my time here but the processes that led me to it. This concept of a cumulative collection connects with the temporary lifetime of cardboard. Along with the paint eating away, the imprints of visitors stepping on the work will slowly degrade it throughout the exhibition, inherently representing the finality of this period in my life while also showcasing this current moment not only in time but space that the work exists in. Continuously being shaped by those experiencing it and thus reflecting a perspective beyond mine or the viewers' but of the piece and space itself.
